Oh Gender Politics

It’s really weird to have an involved other parent.

I am mostly guilty of that thing people do where men get revered for doing things that are just expected of women. Where a man doing housework is referred to as “helping out” and I thank Ian profusely if he changes a diaper because isn’t that supposed to be my problem. And this morning, when Hannah woke up for the day at 7:45 (a luxurious 2 hrs and 15 minutes later than usual) Ian just got up with her, and I slept through it. When I came downstairs, I felt all guilty, thanked him profusely and apologized for the fact that lately it’s a given that I sleep through when she wakes up for the day around 5. He pointed out that he sleeps through her 2 and 4 wakings, and that most mornings he heads off to work, so if he gets up with her early on weekends and holidays… you know, why am I handing out medals of honour?

My family and I were discussion stupid job interview questions; my aunt having been asked, “what would you do if you were given a task that you didn’t want to do?” And she replied, “uhhhh. I’d do it.”

I would very much want to respond, “well, like a husband asked to do housework, I would do a really half-assed job and I would probably interrupt your work to ask you so many stupid questions that you’d just do it yourself next time.”
