Dear Canadians

Here’s what. You can love or hate the Harper government, love or hate the idea of a coalition taking down his government, I don’t care. But for the sake of accuracy, there are a couple of things I need to say.

1. I don’t care what you think you learned from the Phantom Menace, a vote of non-confidence is not a fucking “Coup d’Etat”, it is part of the parliamentary process. It is legal, non-violent and constitutional — which “Coups d’Etat” generally are not. (And if Stephane Dion had a secret clone army that would turn traitor and kill all his enemies, admit you’d like him a hell of a lot better.)

2. A vote of non-confidence is not “stealing” the government from the electorate. The members of the coalition were elected too, and their collective votes count for more than those of the MPs who support Harper. So if they think it’s important enough to vote together, they have that right.

3. You can’t decide the coalition is invalid simply because it relies on the support of the Bloc Quebecois. All MPs were voted in, therefore all MPs’ votes are valid. You and I may not want separatist MPs in parliament, but some Canadians did. And because Canadians voted them in, those MPs therefore get a say in how your country is run. Your trying to exclude the Bloc from “real Canadian government MPs” is like saying that if your spouse expresses separatist leanings then they have no say in how the family budget is spent.

4. Quit calling it a “back room deal” already. It doesn’t look like there are any secrets here. Nope, they’ve been pretty open about wanting to take down the current government and why. Where’s the fucking secret? Oh Noes!!1!ONE! Let’s expose that the Liberals had to make a deal with the socialist and separatist devils… no, wait, everyone knows that. Call it a deal with the devil, call it an unholy trinity, call it… whatever, it’s all frothing rhetoric, but at least make your rhetoric moderately accurate.

Simple right? Now go out and try to express your outrage in ways that aren’t intellectually simple. Please.

If Stephane Dion had a secret clone army that would turn traitor and kill all his enemies, I’d fucking swear eternal allegiance to him.

Well, true. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’d want to. If Stephen Harper had a secret clone army, etc., I might have to serve him, but I sure wouldn’t be doing it with my happy face on.

Thank you for that. I’m not sure why half the country doesn’t understand this concept.

NZ had a bunch of official parties during the election .http://www.elections.org.nz/record/2008-election-official-results.html Their parliament is based on coalitions. It has to be – otherwise they wouldn’t get anything done.
Also, it it’s MMP (Mixed Member Proportional – http://www.elections.org.nz/voting/mmp/history-mmp.html) – which I always thought Canada should try. The government should think about that…
