I have become that woman in the office. The one that everyone looks at when someone makes a sexist remark because they expect some reaction from my quarter.
I’m not even a guaranteed reaction. Seriously. I let about three out of four just go.
I don’t even know what to say. Clearly I’m s’posed to think it says something about me – that I’m always the woman who reacts. But, (probably because I am that kind of woman) I think it says something about our culture – that gendered put-downs are considered so common-place everyone notices when there is one person out of 50 who has a 25% chance of saying, “what do you mean by that?” or “is that so?”
“You should buy a bunch of those truck-nuts and keep them in a jar on your desk,” says my so-helpful aunt who helped shape my ball-breakin’ feminist ways.
Haha, I kid. We hardly break any balls in my family.
